Models for multiphase flows enable the calculation of problems with free surfaces as they occur in pipettes. In addition to the influence of gravity, the fluid-specific properties such as surface tension and the wettability of solid surfaces are also taken into account. From the velocity and pressure fields as well as from the phase distribution, the pipettes are directly optimised with regard to their suction behaviour, the avoidance of air inclusions or the damage to sensitive media.
